Located in Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire the Ancient Ram Inn is considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in the country. One of the reasons for this is the location of the Inn on the intersection of two ancient Ley lines which channel energy directly from Stonehenge to the Inn. It is also reported that this same site is home to a Pagan burial ground dating back more than 5000 years.
The inn dates from 1145 and has enjoyed a colourful history that has seen it play host to slaves working on the construction of the nearby St Mary’s church, and a suspected witch who was later burned at the stake. There is also evidence of Devil worship and ritual sacrifice at the inn, with child skeletons being found under the staircase. The present owner John Humphries purchased the property in 1968 and still lives on the premises.
The Inn has featured on numerous television shows including Most Haunted and Ghost Adventures. Visitors to the Ancient Ram have reported many spectres over the year, often the appearances are related to the numerous stories which have grown up around this building over the years. The Witches Room, where the purported Witch sought refuge before she was captured is apparently still haunted by her spirit. Another room, known as the Bishops Inn is located on the first floor of the building. Guests who spent the night there, when the building was still a public inn, were known to flee in panic in the middle of the night. Those who have managed to stay there for the whole night report that the room is frequented by the spirit of a monk on a regular basis. Guest in other rooms in the inn report evidence of a succubus creeping into their beds during the night, while they were sleeping.
Unusually, ghostly activity is not confined to the hours of the night. A plumber working at the inn noted the appearance of a centurion on horseback who scared him by riding straight through a wall. At other times previous owners of the inn have been seen sitting with visitors from the present day.
